The body of works in this project are the result of a personal inquiry on the unbalanced power struggle between the collective and singular, between society and the individual, a codependent and often harmful relationship. Balancing the two gives birth to stereotypes, social norms, negotiations and permanent re-definitions, discrimination who find their resolution in the persona, a mask that individuals wear in contact with the Other. In the body of works, the individual takes the shape of a toy, a mass-produced object that is mass-distributed, chosen not only for it`s life-less attribute but also for it`s own likeability. The idea of “one size fits all” is applied in the human collective, where the individual wants to “fit like a glove” to the collective expectations. The paintings are a visual translation on the methods of perceiving the Other in one own`s consciousness, a process where one picks and chooses which aspects are relevant or not, and unconsciously one can reinterpret and come up with their own sense of the Other. The other is now deformed, broken and estranged. A game of seeing without truly understanding paves the way for transferring one`s own expectations and fears, wantings or ideals on this misunderstood Other.
